Despite the pandemic, the project DIABFRAIL-LATAM continues its course

The COVID 19 global pandemic has also had its effects on our project. When recruitment of participants was about to start in the first quarter of 2020, the pandemic broke out. This meant that recruitment could not start within the timeframe originally planned in the project work plan.

 

During these two years, researchers at participating centers in Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru had to turn their attention to care activities to cope with the ravages of the pandemic. The teams responsible for recruitment and intervention, completely focused on the clinic, postponed the start of the project to deal with this emergency.

 

Several of the researchers were also affected by the virus, and the ethics committees responsible for giving the ok to recruitment and the intervention, had to stop their activities.

 

Unfortunately, it would not have been possible the participation of subjects who, in other circumstances, would have been agree to come to health centers participating in the study to take part in the intervention.

 

From Europe, once the design of the study by the British partner was completed, the Spanish and Italian teams have continued working during these two years supervising the pandemic situation in the four participating Latin American countries, as well as the particular situation of the recruiting centers and the committees. Likewise, close contact was maintained, both with the investigators in charge in these countries, and with the European Commission to consider the changes to be applied in the work plan in order to minimize, as much as possible, the effects of the pandemic on the research.

 

Two years after the beginning of the pandemic, DIABFRAIL-LATAM has finally been able to start recruiting of participants in order to continue with the research and currently has 88 participants included in the research in Colombia.

 

The project is therefore continuing as planned after the forced pause due to the pandemic situation. Thus, over the next few months, it is expected that, first recruitment and then the intervention, will be completed and, according to plan, the scalling up phase will  begin and it will be carried out by the Pan American Health Organization, a WHO affiliate in America, another of the partners participating in the project.

A pesar de la pandemia, el proyecto DIABFRAIL-LATAM continúa su curso

La pandemia mundial del COVID 19 ha tenido también sus efectos sobre nuestro proyecto. Cuando el reclutamiento de participantes estaba a punto de iniciarse en el primer trimestre de 2020, estalló la pandemia. Esto hizo que el reclutamiento no se pudiera iniciar en el plazo previsto originariamente en el plan de trabajo del proyecto.

 

Durante estos dos años, los investigadores de los centros participantes en Chile, Colombia, Méjico y Perú tuvieron que volcarse en la actividad asistencial para hacer frente a los estragos de la pandemia. Los equipos responsables del reclutamiento y de la intervención, completamente enfocados en la clínica, pospusieron el inicio del proyecto para atender esta urgencia.

 

Varios de los investigadores resultaron además afectados por el virus, y los comités de ética responsables de dar luz verde al reclutamiento y a la intervención, tuvieron que cerrar durante meses. Lamentablemente tampoco hubiera sido posible conseguir la participación de sujetos que, sin que se hubiesen dado estas circunstancias, hubieran accedido a acudir sin ningún impedimento a los centros sanitarios participantes en el estudio para formar parte de la intervención.

 

Desde Europa, una vez concluido el diseño del estudio por parte del partner británico, los equipos de España y de Italia han seguido trabajando durante estos dos años supervisando la situación pandémica en los cuatro países latinoamericanos participantes, así como la situación particular de los centros reclutadores y de los comités. Así mismo, se mantuvo estrecho contacto, tanto con los investigadores a cargo en estos países, como con la Comisión Europea para valorar los cambios necesarios en el plan de trabajo a efectos de minimizar, en la medida de los posible, los efectos de la pandemia sobre el estudio.

Dos años más tarde del inicio de la pandemia, DIABFRAIL-LATAM ha podido al fin iniciar su reclutamiento para poder retomar la investigación y, en la actualidad, ya cuenta con 88 sujetos incluidos en la misma, en Colombia.

El proyecto sigue, por tanto, su curso previsto una vez superado el parón forzoso de la pandemia. Así, durante los próximos meses, se espera completar, primero el reclutamiento y después la intervención para -según el plan previsto- dar inicio a la fase de escalado, que correrá a cargo de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud, filial de la OMS en América, otro de los socios participantes en el proyecto.
